The Gary Douglas Band - 'Deep in the Water (Redeux)'

In the words of Douglas, the latest single release Deep in the Water (Redeux) from The Gary Douglas Band was truly a “labour of love” for the American singer-songwriter.

The single tells the true story of how a humble farmer from West Virginia stood against the American chemical corporate giant DuPont after an investigation led to the discovery of a DuPont cover-up, regarding the illegal dissemination and dumping of toxic chemicals in Ohio; surrounded by communities reaching approximately 70,000 individuals.

Co-written with the multi Grammy-nominated country songwriter Darrell Brown and produced by Anthony (AJAX) Resta, this steady rock record comes in at around 95bpm with the main melodic chord progression from Eb minor to the major Db creating a captivating chorus that will instantly incite the listener to hum along to the hook.

With the release of the 2016 breakthrough album Keepin’ Faith, followed by the 2018 release Deep in the Water, this single is a fantastic showcase for the NY band and deserves attention not only for its powerful contribution to Americana, but also its rigorous rebellion against injustice and corporate control.

Although there is no direct affiliation with the feature film Dark Waters, starring Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway, both projects are based on the same subject matter with the feature portraying lawyer Robert Billot initially discovering DuPont’s illegal activity. Gary Douglas was brought on to help defeat DuPont, this is not portrayed in the movie until the last scene that states that the lead trial counsel (Gary Douglas) won 700 million in punitive damages.

The opening line, “Man-made chemicals are poisoning the earth”, sets the scene for the deep lyrical subject matter surrounding Douglas’ evident battle against corporate greed and injustice through the medium of music and legal action. It is rare to find an artist whose music career correlates so potently to their personal life and yet, The Gary Douglas Band pulls no punches when it comes to the embodiment of rebel-rock.

This song was really a labor of love—the lyrics especially,” says Douglas. “It’s the true story of a small town humble farmer from Parkersburg, West Virginia, who took on the corporate giant DuPont with the help of an unlikely hero, lawyer Rob Bilott, who will be portrayed by Mark Ruffalo in the upcoming blockbuster Dark Waters. It was my honor to pen this song along with co-writer Darrell Brown—multi Grammy-nominated country songwriter—as one of the people who witnessed these incredible events firsthand.
