The Road To Tibooburra showcases masterful songwriting, blending raw storytelling with rich instrumentation in an immersive musical experience

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Steve Kilbey is a visionary musician and songwriter whose career has been defined by artistic exploration and reinvention. Known for his work with The Church and an extensive solo catalog, Kilbey’s creative spirit continues to evolve in unexpected ways. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, he found himself drawn into an unconventional project, first a silent film titled Space Junk, and later, an ambitious musical that would take on a life of its own.

Originally cast as a mysterious drifter in Space Junk, Kilbey’s involvement deepened when filmmaker Julian reimagined the project as a musical about a washed-up rock star named Lord Jim. Tasked with writing the songs, Kilbey embraced the challenge, collaborating with a talented group of musicians known as the Winged Heels, players who had previously worked on his albums 11 Women and The Hall of Counterfeits.

Now, after years of sitting unreleased, the collection of songs crafted for the musical is finally seeing the light of day. Though they were initially composed with a specific narrative in mind, Kilbey invites listeners to interpret them freely, weaving their own stories through the music. Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, this latest release is another testament to his boundless creativity and ability to turn any project into a sonic adventure.
