ABOUT THE ARTIST
For California native Chris Beland, music has always been a profound part of life, intricately tied to themes of death, love, and loss. Seven years ago, he played music for his stepfather in his final moments, an experience that profoundly influenced his artistic journey. This connection to music as a form of therapy led Beland to perform for individuals in hospice care, using his autobiographical songwriting to process and express his own life experiences. "…music is therapy for me," Beland shares, highlighting how his songs are often reflections of his personal story.
As a songwriter influenced by legends like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, Beland’s music narrates his journey through life’s challenges, including teenage fatherhood, addiction, and reconnecting with his biological father at age 32. His discography, from Outer Space to What I Believe, showcases his continual growth and evolution as an artist.
In 2023, Beland’s role as a hospice musician brought a new wave of inspiration. Santa Barbara Records invited him to record an EP, leading to a collaboration with producer Tariqh Akoni and a group of acclaimed musicians. Despite the remote recording process, the ensemble, including bassist Leland Sklar, drummer Curt Bisquera, pedal steel player Rich Hinman, and percussionist Ramon Yslas, enriched Beland’s sound with a warm, resonant quality reminiscent of Seventies-era radio rock.
