ABOUT THE ARTIST
From his early journey into music with piano and cello lessons to his self-taught guitar skills, John Fishell’s foundation in music is as varied as it is deep. His classical training shines through in his compositions, adding a refined touch to his robust rock sound, which also integrates elements of jazz and world music.
His recording career began with a four-track cassette machine, setting the stage for his later collaborations with some of jazz’s luminaries. While studying music in college, John had the opportunity to work under NEA Jazz Master David Liebman, a partnership that led him to engineer albums for other celebrated artists like Jon Hendricks and Jack DeJohnette. His technical talent contributed to the Grammy-nominated Dave Liebman Big Band album, Beyond the Line.
John’s academic career was equally distinguished. He served as a full-time professor at several prestigious institutions, including MTSU and UC-Denver, and he established a renowned music recording program at Purdue University. Despite his success in academia, John’s passion for creating music led him to retire in 2021 to dedicate himself fully to his art.
Now, with his focus solely on his music, John brings a lifetime of experience and passion to his latest projects, inviting listeners to explore his dynamic and multifaceted sound.
