ABOUT THE ARTIST
David, known today as "The Rusty," has lived a life deeply entrenched in American music. Born during the revolutionary music scene of 60's San Francisco, the vibrant melodies and dynamic rhythms of the era coursed through his veins. By fifth grade, a guitar was in his hands, setting him on a musical journey that would span decades.
At 17, David relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he took to the airwaves as a radio DJ for WTJU and managed a record store. He became a prominent voice for the alternative rock movement that was just finding its footing.
The 80s saw David embark on a number of musical ventures, fronting and contributing to bands like Lowest Common Denominator, Swingin’ Ians, GRUBB!, and Sin Like Flint, to name a few. His talent wasn't limited to performing alone; David co-produced the debut album for hardcore band The Landlords and collaborated in the mix of Baby Opaque's psychedelic release.
David's influence was palpable in the Charlottesville music scene. Sharing the stage with renowned artists like Pavement, GWAR, and Dave Matthews, David continued to shape the soundscape of the time. His songwriting skills gained national recognition when San Francisco’s psycho-punk band Bomb covered “I Loved You Then I Died” – a track originally penned by David for Swingin’ Ians.
In the late 90s and early 2000s, David ventured into the management side of the music industry. He became an integral part of DC’s iconic Nightclub 9:30 and DJed as ChAoTic! in Chief Ike’s Cosmo Lounge. His passion for music took him to Seattle in 2005, where he managed Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, only to return to DC seven years later. 2020's pandemic brought introspection and a yearning for the strings of his guitar. The pause in David’s musical journey came to an end, and with renewed vigor, "The Rusty" was born. His music is a testament to a lifetime of experiences, influences, and undying passion.
