ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jimi C. Dright, Jr., better known as Chopmaster J, is a pioneering figure in rap and hip hop, widely recognized as the co-founder of the legendary group Digital Underground. As a drummer, producer, and artist, Chopmaster J helped shape the sound of West Coast rap in the late 1980s and beyond. Forming Digital Underground alongside Greg "Shock G" Jacobs in 1987, the group stood out for its innovative blend of alternative hip-hop and heavy funk influences, setting the tone for a new wave of rap music. Their use of 1970s funk samples became a signature sound, defining their music and influencing the larger West Coast rap genre.
In addition to his work with Digital Underground, Chopmaster J made history by possessing the earliest known recordings of Tupac Shakur. His contributions to the group were instrumental in launching the careers of several notable artists, including Tupac, as well as affiliated acts like Raw Fusion, Saafir, and Mystic.
